From a company whose clientele included Napoleon I, this attractive ceramic kerchief wall pocket, by Sarreguemines, and impressed with the design #2278, presents hand-painted pastel red and yellow roses among blue and light green and tan stems. To the tip detail is a lovely, lightly raised pin, adding country charm to the piece.
As noted by the Paul Utzschneider and Companie, Louis XV mark on the backside, this piece dates to c.1900. Attached is also a very old paper label which is unidentifiable and partially torn, one part is loose.
NOTE: The natural color of the entire piece is an ivory/cream, as seen in the first photo. Some photos may appear whiter due to lighting for detail.
Origin: France: pre-owned
Dimensions: 11 3/4"L (tip to tip) x 5 1/2"W (at pocket opening)
Condition: Very Good. There is one pin-head sized nick to the inside wall, along with two specks, one unknown beneath the glaze, and one which appears to be a raised ceramic speck, on the inside tip which we could not reach. No other chips are seen or felt.
Due to its age there is generalized fine crazing, (please see the photos). There is some paint irregularity which appears to be from the hand painting process during manufacturing. Despite the crazing, the glaze, still, feels smooth, is intact and is polished.
